Each mosaic is handcrafted using raw materials from Africa. The design and the creation of every piece is done by Engelbrecht and his staff at the workshops in Prince Albert. The processes required are time consuming and elaborate with hundreds or thousands of shards of eggshell being placed in the individual designs, often with inlays of silver, brass, copper and leather.

The composition of the mosaics is environmentally friendly and from sustainable resources. All of the ostrich eggshell is from unfertilised or hatched eggs supplied by local ostrich farmers*.

*The Ostrich is the largest living bird in the world today. A mature ostrich (male) stands nearly 8 feet high, and weighs between 160 to 230 pounds. The female will lay approximately 70-80 eggs in a year but due to the very high mortality rates, most ostrich eggs are incubated by the breeder.

Caring for an AVOOVA Ostrich Eggshell Mosaic

In spite of their apparently fragile beauty, AVOOVA ostrich eggshell mosaics are very resilient. The surface of the mosaic is water and stain resistant and will withstand normal domestic hot and cold temperatures and where appropriate is treated and sealed for the service of food.

Clean with warm water, a soft cloth and mild detergent.
Do not expose to extreme heat or cold.
Do not immerse in water for an extended period.
Can be buffed with furniture polish.
